The Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world on June 15 by trading All-Star hitter Rafael Devers hours after the club swept the New York Yankees. With one of the worst records in baseball since then, many clubs have been speculating about how Boston will approach the MLB trade deadline.

Speaking to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said the club intends to be aggressive buyers at the trade deadline, with the focus on winning now instead of in the future.

“I think we’ve talked a lot about looking to the future, at some point, the future has to be now. We went into 2025 expecting to compete for the division and expecting to make it to the playoffs. We haven’t played as well as we’re capable of, but that goal still exists, and we’re not so far away that we should be thinking about 2026 or 2027.”

Heading into MLB games today, the Red Sox lineup ranks last in runs scored (26) and OPS (.560) since June 17. Even with changes made, Boston’s batting order is responsible for an abysmal .190/.250/.310 triple-slash line across its last 317 plate appearances.

Top prospect Roman Anthony has a .548 OPS since being called up. Since demoting Kristian Campbell to Triple-A a week ago, Boston’s second basemen have compiled a .643 OPS. The Red Sox will also find themselves in the market for pitching, with the club ranked 21st in WHIP (1.34) and 19th in ERA (4.03).

There will still be clubs hoping Boston’s losing skid stretches into July, potentially convincing the front office to give up on competing for a playoff spot this season. As of now, that appears unlikely, as the club seems intent on making additions to turn things around.
