Dominic Smith looked like he’s rounding into form with two homers and the New York Mets topped the Houston Astros 8-2 in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Saturday.
Pete Alonso also homered for the Mets, who got 4 2/3 solid innings from Joey Lucchesi, who gave up a run on three hits and a walk while striking out four.
Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez homered for the Astros, both solo shots.
Red Sox 7, Pirates 4 (8 innings)
Boston had just nine hits and one for extra bases — a double by pinch-hitter Michael Chavis — but Bobby Dalbec continued his hot spring by driving in two and helped lift the Red Sox past Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla. Kevin Newman was 3-for-4 and Bryan Reynolds was 3-for-3 for the Pirates.
Tigers 9, Phillies 8
Julio Teheran got rocked for six runs on three walks and three hits over 3 2/3 innings, but Detroit pulled out a victory on eight runs in the eighth at Lakeland, Fla. Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola struck out five in three innings, giving up a run on three hits.
Rays 2, Twins 0
Tampa Bay starter Tyler Glasnow threw five scoreless innings and struck out 10, with two walks and three hits and four relievers held onto the shutout in Fort Myers, Fla. Minnesota only had four hits, none for extra bases.
Yankees 5, Blue Jays 1 (8)
Gleyber Torres homered twice and was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Mike Ford was 4-for-4 with one blast as New York cruised past Toronto in Tampa, Fla. Joe Panik drove in the only Blue Jays run with a groundout in the eighth.
Indians 9, Dodgers 2
Shane Bieber gave up two runs — one earned — on six hits, a walk and nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings and Owen Miller was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and runs scored for Cleveland in Phoenix. Trevor Bauer was less fortunate for Los Angeles, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings.
Padres 2, Angels 0 (7)
Blake Snell blanked Los Angeles with one hit and a walk over five innings and the pen held the Dodgers off the board as Jorge Mateo drove in the only runs of the game on a two-out double in the fifth at Tempe, Ariz. Junior Guerra was touched for both runs on two hits and a walk in one inning of work.
Brewers 6, Royals 6
Lorenzo Cain homered and scored three runs in a 2-for-3 effort with a walk for Milwaukee and Erick Mejia was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Kansas City at Surprise, Ariz. Both the Brewers and Royals bullpens gave up four runs.
Athletics 5, Rangers 1
A.J. Puk shut Texas down for four innings on one with three strikeouts and Oakland got to Kyle Gibson for four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks and cruised in Mesa, Ariz. Ramon Laureano was 3-for-4 with three driven in.
White Sox 8, Rockies 2
Lucas Giolito threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings and Jose Abreu finally hit his first home run of the spring as Chicago pounded Colorado at Scottsdale, Ariz. Alan Trejo homered for the Rockies.
Braves 8, Orioles 5
Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his fifth homer of the spring and Atlanta built an 8-1 lead heading into the eighth inning at West Villages, Fla. Tyler Nevin hit his first homer of the spring and drove in three for Baltimore.
Marlins 8, Cardinals 4
JJ Bleday was 2-for-3, hit a home run and drove in two runs as Florida edged St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla. Paul Goldschmidt hit his second home run of the spring for the Cardinals.
