Max Muncy blasted a three-run homer in the fifth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers added two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh Saturday night to defeat the visiting San Diego Padres 8-3.

The win was the seventh straight for the Dodgers, who are 7-2 against the Padres this season. The Padres had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth with three unearned runs off Dodgers starter Andrew Heaney.

Mookie Betts opened the bottom of the fifth with a single and stole second off Padres starter and loser Mike Clevinger (3-4). With two out, Will Smith — who gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the second with his 16th homer of the season — was hit by a pitch and stole second.

Muncy then homered to right, his 11th homer of the season, giving the Dodgers a 5-3 lead.

Mets 8, Braves 5 (Game 1)

Francisco Lindor had three hits and three RBIs to lift host New York over Atlanta in the opener of a doubleheader.

David Peterson scattered three hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings in a spot start for New York. The three hits tied a season high for Lindor.

Jake Odorizzi, whom the Braves acquired from the Houston Astros on Monday, gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out four over 4 2/3 innings.

Mets 6, Braves 2 (Game 2)

Max Scherzer continued his surge, striking out 11 in seven scoreless innings as New York beat visiting Atlanta to sweep a pivotal doubleheader between the National League East rivals.

Scherzer (8-2) allowed four hits and walked none while tying his season high in strikeouts. The veteran right-hander is 3-1 with a 1.37 ERA in seven starts since returning from a six-week stint on the injured list due to an oblique injury.

The Mets scored all the runs they’d need in the third against Max Fried (10-4). Pete Alonso delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded. Darin Ruf hit a potential double-play grounder to first. Matt Olson fired to shortstop Dansby Swanson to force Alonso, but Swanson’s throw sailed past Fried, who was covering first, and two more runs scored.

Cardinals 1, Yankees 0

Jordan Montgomery and three St. Louis relievers combined to shut out visiting New York.

Montgomery (4-3), whom the Yankees dealt to the Cardinals for outfielder Harrison Bader just ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline, blanked his former teammates for five innings on two hits and one walk. He exited the game for precautionary reasons after suffering leg cramps.

Nolan Arenado drove in the only run for the Cardinals, who have won six straight games and eight of their last nine. The Yankees have lost four consecutive games and five of their last six.

Cubs 4, Marlins 0

Left-hander Drew Smyly combined with Mark Leiter Jr. on a five-hitter, P.J. Higgins homered and Chicago made it two straight home wins over Miami.

Bouncing back from a four-inning, five-run debacle in San Francisco earlier in the week, Smyly (4-6) participated in his first combined shutout since a 1-0 triumph over the Marlins in July 2021. He allowed five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking one.

The Marlins nearly ended the shutout bid early when Peyton Burdick, Jesus Aguilar and Bryan De La Cruz all singled in the third inning. But Miguel Rojas, who had reached base on a fielder’s choice, was gunned down at home plate by right fielder Seiya Suzuki while trying to score on De La Cruz’s two-out hit.

Mariners 2, Angels 1 (Game 1)

All-Star Ty France hit a two-run homer and rookie George Kirby pitched six strong innings as Seattle defeated visiting Los Angeles in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Kirby (3-3) allowed one run on six hits. The right-hander didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight, one shy of his season best. Erik Swanson worked the ninth for his third save, a career high.

Trailing 1-0, the Mariners scored all the runs they’d need in the third inning. Cal Raleigh led off with a walk before being erased on Jarred Kelenic’s grounder to short. Kelenic stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch by right-hander Jaime Barria (1-2). France then hit a 1-0 pitch into the Mariners’ bullpen in left-center field to make it 2-1.

Angels 7, Mariners 1 (Game 2)

Reid Detmers pitched seven strong innings as Los Angeles defeated host Seattle to earn a split of a doubleheader between the American League West rivals.

Mickey Moniak and David Fletcher hit home runs in the nightcap for the Angels, who improved to 6-2 at Seattle this season. Detmers (4-3) allowed one run on six hits. The left-hander walked one and struck out seven.

Seattle right-hander Chris Flexen (7-9) lost for the first time in his past six decisions. Flexen gave up five runs on six hits in six innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Guardians 4, Astros 1

Cal Quantrill tossed six scoreless innings and Amed Rosario had a two-run single in the second to fuel host Cleveland to a victory over Houston.

Jose Ramirez ripped an RBI double in the first inning and joined Andres Gimenez and Myles Straw with two hits for the Guardians. Cleveland, which snapped a seven-game home losing skid to Houston, will look to salvage a split of the four-game series when the teams reconvene on Sunday.

Aledmys Diaz had an RBI double with two outs in the ninth inning for the Astros, who had outscored the opposition 21-4 during their three-game winning streak.

Reds 7, Brewers 5

Jose Barrero hit his first two major league home runs to help Cincinnati defeat Milwaukee, which lost for the fifth time in six games.

Joey Votto and Donovan Solano also homered for the Reds, who have won five of seven. Reds starter Nick Lodolo went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and four hits. He struck out four and walked four on 100 pitches.

Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby (2-10) also went 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and three hits. He struck out five and walked five. Andrew McCutchen and Keston Hiura homered and Christian Yelich went 3-for-4 for the Brewers.

Orioles 6, Pirates 3

Ryan McKenna drove in two runs and every player in the lineup had a hit as Baltimore beat visiting Pittsburgh.

Four relievers combined on four no-hit innings to help the Orioles reach a five-game winning streak for the second time this season. The last time, the string was extended to 10 games.

Orioles starter Austin Voth (2-1) went five-plus innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one. Oneil Cruz hit a two-run home run for the Pirates. Ben Gamel had two hits and scored two runs.

Tigers 9, Rays 1

Jonathan Schoop homered and drove in three runs, Garrett Hill recorded his second major league victory and host Detroit pounded Tampa Bay.

Harold Castro had three hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Javier Baez knocked in a pair of runs. Hill (2-3) gave up one run and six hits and struck out six in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three.

Rays ace Shane McClanahan (10-5) gave up four runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. His three strikeouts were a season low. Infielder Yu Chang homered and also pitched an inning for the first time in his career.

Phillies 11, Nationals 5

Rhys Hoskins homered in the first inning for the third straight game, and host Philadelphia rolled to a win against Washington.

Matt Vierling and J.T. Realmuto also homered, and Jean Segura had three hits for the Phillies, who scored six runs in the first inning en route to their fourth straight win. They have also won nine of their last 10 games.

Washington starter Patrick Corbin failed to make it out of the first inning for the second time in three starts. He allowed six runs on five hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Corbin is 4-16 with a 7.02 ERA and is on pace to become the first major league pitcher to lose 20 games since Mike Maroth went 9-21 for the 2003 Detroit Tigers.

Rangers 8, White Sox 0

Adolis Garcia drove in five runs and Dane Dunning yielded one hit in seven innings to push Texas past Chicago in Arlington, Texas.

Dunning (2-6) picked up his first victory since April 30 against the Atlanta Braves, when he logged a season-high 7 2/3 innings. This time around, he walked just one and struck out six.

Garcia delivered the impactful hits, with a two-run single in the third inning and a three-run double in the seventh. The Rangers have taken two of the first three of their four-game series with the White Sox.

Giants 7, Athletics 3

LaMonte Wade Jr., J.D. Davis and Joey Bart all homered in support of left-hander Carlos Rodon, powering visiting San Francisco to a victory over Oakland in the opener of a two-game interleague series.

Rodon (10-6) reached double figures in wins for the second consecutive season, limiting the Athletics to one run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and did not issue a walk.

San Francisco relievers Tyler Rogers, Yunior Marte and Jarlin Garcia finished up for Rodon, with Garcia serving up a two-run homer to Skye Bolt, his fourth of the season, in the ninth.

Twins 7, Blue Jays 3

Jose Miranda homered and doubled, and Luis Arraez went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs to help Minnesota to a victory over Toronto in Minneapolis.

Jorge Polanco doubled among two hits and had two RBIs, and Jake Cave added an RBI triple for Minnesota, which won for the third time in its last four games.

Trevor Megill (3-1), who took over for starter Dylan Bundy at the beginning of the fifth inning, picked up the win with a hitless inning of relief.

Rockies 3, Diamondbacks 2

Ryan McMahon’s solo home run in the top of the ninth inning proved just enough to push Colorado past Arizona in Phoenix.

Colorado trailed 2-1 going into the eighth, but Elehuris Montero, playing in his 16th career game, tied the score with his first career home run. It came against Arizona starter Merrill Kelly. Montero finished the night 2-for-3.

The decisive home run by McMahon against Ian Kennedy (4-5) was McMahon’s 10th of the season. The Rockies won for the second time in three games following a five-game losing streak. The Diamondbacks have lost two of three and six of eight.

Royals 5, Red Sox 4

Nick Pratto hit a two-out homer to center field, lifting Kansas City to a walk-off victory over visiting Boston.

Pratto launched a 3-2 changeup from Garrett Whitlock (2-2) for his first career walk-off hit. It was the eighth walk-off loss this season for the Red Sox.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Kansas City’s Daniel Lynch allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out six with no walks. Nathan Eovaldi’s line was almost identical. He also allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings without yielding a walk. He struck out seven.
