The Milwaukee Brewers placed closer Josh Hader on the COVID-19 injured list Monday.
The team added veteran right-hander John Axford to the active roster in a corresponding move.
The Brewers also reinstated infielder/outfielder Jace Peterson from the injured list and optioned infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes to Triple-A Nashville.
Hader, 27, is 3-2 with a 1.83 ERA and 22 saves through 40 appearances, with 67 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings. The three-time All-Star left-hander closed out Sunday’s 2-1 win in Atlanta with a perfect ninth inning.
The team did not specify whether it’s a contact-tracing situation or whether Hader has tested positive. He will miss at least seven days (close contact) and could be out 10 days or more (positive test).
Axford, 38, signed as a free agent on June 24 and has not pitched in the majors since 2018. He previously pitched for the Brewers from 2009-13, leading the National League with 46 saves in 2011.
Peterson, 31, was placed on the COVID IL on July 27. He is hitting .244 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 50 games.
Reyes, 27, is batting .214 with two RBIs in 38 games this season with Milwaukee.
