Miami (Fla.) hired Dan Radakovich, the athletic director at Clemson since 2012, to the same role on Thursday, returning him to the school where he launched his career in athletics administration.

“This is a significant moment for the future of athletics at the University of Miami,” campus president Julio Frenk said in a news release. “Dan is one of the most highly regarded athletics directors in the country. He knows Miami well, from his time at the U and at Clemson, an ACC peer. His proven success, and the success that Dan has helped enable for student-athletes in the classroom and in competition, is reflective of our values. He has the experience, the relationships, and the passion it takes to ignite and sustain excellence — the very core of our bold vision for the future of Hurricanes Athletics.”

At Clemson, the Tigers’ football team reached four national championship games and won two of those under his watch.

At Miami, Radakovich is expected to become one of the nation’s highest-paid athletic directors. The school did not announce contract terms.

Radakovich, 63, earned his MBA from Miami in 1982, then served as athletics business manager there for two years. Subsequent jobs followed at Long Beach State, South Carolina, American University and LSU before he was named athletic director at Georgia Tech in 2006, where he worked until moving on to Clemson.

His hiring is part of a new beginning for Miami football, which this week introduced Mario Cristobal as its new head coach.

The additions were lauded by David Epstein, chair of the athletics committee of the school’s Board of Trustees.

“We sought out a proven leader who is aspirational, entrepreneurial, and visionary, and who will build a world-class athletics program at the U,” he said. “Dan is that leader. His hire, and the extraordinary hire of Mario Cristobal as our next football head coach, puts Miami on a trajectory unmatched by any athletics program in the country.”
