Houston HC Major Applewhite zings Tom Herman during speaking engagement

This past winter, Houston’s football program underwent a few major changes, not the least of which was seeing Tom Herman leave for Texas. That move resulted in Herman’s offensive coordinator, Major Applewhite, being bumped up into the captain’s chair.

Another major development was that quarterback Greg Ward Jr., one of the most dangerous dual-threat passers in the nation, left the program after his senior season. Whoever wins the battle to start behind center won’t be nearly as potent an athlete.

Applewhite, appearing at a speaking engagement Wednesday, tied both of these things into a little joke aimed at his predecessor, via Mark Berman of Fox26.

“One of the questions I get is, what are the biggest differences and what things are going to be the same going into this year?

“Off the top of my head,” Applewhite quipped, “We’re not going to be nearly as athletic at quarterback, but we’re going to be a hell of a lot more athletic at head coach.”

As many are aware, Applewhite was a college football quarterback for the University of Texas from 1998-2001. He set dozens of school records during his tenure with the Longhorns and was known for being a dangerous runner, as well as a passer.

Herman, for all his strengths, cannot compete with that. And he knows it, with a caveat.

Well played, by both these coaches. It’s just a shame they won’t get a chance to lock horns this upcoming season.
