Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith came out quickly to defend Jameis Winston after former Florida State head man Bobby Bowden called the young signal caller an embarrassment to the university.
In defense of his quarterback, Smith had this to say to the Tampa Bay Times:
“I’m disappointed. To say that the young man is an ’embarrassment’? That’s pretty strong. I just don’t think he’s speaking for all of Florida State, even though he’s in an official role there. Normally, when you’re in a family, you don’t do that. I’m very disappointed that somebody like that would make that type of statement.”
Smith also indicated that when members of the Buccaneers organization talked to staff at Florida State, nobody called Winston an embarrassment. In fact, he claims that opinions were quite positive, especially from current Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher.
Considering Tampa Bay selected Winston No. 1 overall in the 2015 draft and signed him to a rookie deal worth $24 million guaranteed within hours of the pick, it’s not too likely that the team was thrown off by any comments individuals in Tallahassee might have made.
