LaVar Ball vowed in 2017 that LaMelo Ball would be the best basketball player of his sons. He was proven right and with LaMelo becoming the star of the Charlotte Hornets, LaVar believes Michael Jordan has no place giving advice to the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year.
LaMelo is quickly becoming one of the best, young guards in the NBA. Averaging 20 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game this season, the 20-year-old is a candidate to make his first NBA All-Star Game. It’s all happened with LaVar Ball relatively out of the spotlight, but that changed this week.
In an interview with HoopsView, LaVar Ball made it clear that there is no piece of advice Jordan needs to give LaMelo because the greatest player in NBA history can’t relate to today’s version of the game.
“How often does he seek out advice from Michael Jordan? Never! What advice he gonna give him? You tell me what advice he gonna give him. … When the last time he won a championship? And the game has changed. What’s he gonna tell him?”
LaVar Ball on if LaMelo seeks advice from Michael Jordan
Jordan first bought a minority stake in the Hornets in 2006, just behind then-majority owner Robert L Johnson in terms of ownership shares. He paid $275 million in 2010 to become the majority stakeholder, making him the first former player to become the majority owner of an NBA team.
While Jordan hasn’t won an NBA championship since 1998, years before LaMelo was born, he is widely viewed as the best player in NBA history and one of the most unguardable scorers to ever step foot on the court.
Going after the person who drafted LaMelo, signed off on his contract and will hold some important power over his future is risky. It’s also strange to think a second-year guard couldn’t learn some things from a six-time NBA champion and NBA Finals MVP.

But LaVar Ball has also said he would beat Jordan 1-on-1, so saying LaMelo doesn’t need any advice from him is one of the least surprising things ever said in an interview.
