The Los Angeles Lakers landed the biggest fish of the 2019 NBA offseason. Now that Anthony Davis is headed to play with LeBron James, the Lakers also are the odds-on favorites to win the 2020 NBA Finals.
Quite honestly, this is a massive overreaction.
The Lakers do sport two of the NBA’s top players. That’s undeniable. Yet look at the team’s roster now and it’s clear the Lakers also have some significant hurdles to overcome.
First of all, they lack the cap space to sign another top free agent to a max contract without incurring penalties, barring some changes to the way the proposed Anthony Davis trade is currently laid out.
Secondly, while it’s true the Golden State Warriors will not be at their full strength next season even if Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant do both re-sign, the Western Conference is still loaded with quality teams and big-time superstars.
Finally, let’s get real about The King, LeBron James. He’s not the same player who dominated the NBA for more than a decade. He’s still phenomenally gifted. But at the age of 34, and with so many outside interests holding his attention these days, he may be on the downside of his career.
With that in mind, it might be wise to wait a tick before betting on the Lakers to win the 2020 NBA Finals.
