Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi was activated off the injured list and will make his season debut against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old Mondesi missed Kansas City’s first 45 games due to a right oblique strain he sustained in late March.

Mondesi was slated to bat seventh in Tuesday’s lineup against the host Tampa Bay Rays.

Mondesi batted .256 and led the majors with 24 steals in 59 games last season. He had six homers and 22 RBIs.

Mondesi has a .251 career average and 113 stolen bases in 308 games over the past five seasons. He has 32 homers and 137 RBIs.

In 2019, Mondesi stole a career-best 43 bases. He also had 32 thefts in 2018.

Kansas City had a roster opening after optioning right-hander Jake Newberry to Triple-A Tulsa on Monday. Newberry, 26, has a 16.62 ERA in four relief appearances.
