Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid was out there making jokes once the Bryan Colangelo burner accounts story broke last month. Some took it as Embiid throwing shade in the now former 76ers general manager’s direction. Though, it was more about Joel Embiid being Joel Embiid.
Now that the drama has exceeeded anyone’s wildest expectations with Colangelo and the Sixers parting ways, Embiid is taking a more nuanaced and serious stance.
“He was a great guy. He did a great job for us, so I wish him luck,” Embiid told TMZ Sports Thursday evening.
Having been the Sixers’ primary decision maker for the past two years, Colangelo added Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz in the draft. He also played a role in the team signing J.J. Redick. All of this helped Philadelphia earn a surprise trip to the Eastern Conference Semifinals this past season.
Even then, Colangelo’s wife setting up burner accounts to defend her husband led to an ugly divorce between the longtime executive and his now former organization. Trust was lost. And that’s the biggest issue here. Embiid was asked if he thought Colangelo’s wife acted alone, at which point the All-Star said he had “no idea” while noting that “if it was his wife, there’s nothing you can do about that.”
Now that the Colangelo drama is over, Philadelphia has to find a replacement for him as general manager in the coming days. With the team being interested in LeBron James, one name certainly comes to mind.
