James Harden Wants Some Help in the Backcourt

By Vincent Frank

I wonder how Patrick Beverley feels about this.

Coming off the worst performance of his Houston Rockets career in the team’s Game 5 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, James Harden indicated that he wants the team to upgrade in the backcourt this offseason.

Interestingly, Beverley is set to become a free agent this summer. It’s not known whether Harden’s comments were directed at Beverley or that he simply wants more talent in the backcourt.

The issue here is that Beverley will be in high demand on the open market. While he leaves a lot to be desired from a scoring standpoint, he’s one of the best defensive point guards in the NBA. In addition to this, Harden seems to run the point as much as Beverley in Houston’s offense. Maybe that’s something the MVP runner-up wants to change over the next couple months.

One thing is clear here: Houston is likely in for a nice amount of change over the summer. In addition to Beverley (restricted), Josh Smith and Corey Brewer are set to become unrestricted free agents. Both played major roles in the team’s deep playoff run.
