Illinois quarterback Tommy DeVito left Saturday night’s game against visiting Iowa late in the first quarter with a left ankle issue.

Illinois coach Bret Bielema said at halftime that he didn’t expect DeVito to return.

DeVito was tackled for no gain after failing to find a receiver on a second-and-18 play with 47 seconds left in the quarter.

He needed help to make his way to the injury tent and stayed there until about the midpoint of the second quarter, and went back inside the tent after a few minutes on the sideline.

“Tommy hurt his ankle earlier in the fall, and that just kinda got it in the same spot. I don’t think he’ll be back the rest of the game,” Bielema said on the Big Ten Network broadcast.

Junior Artur Sitkowski took over.

DeVito completed 6 of 11 passes for 42 yards and rushed four times for 21 yards before exiting. He entered the game with 4,987 yards passing and a completion mark of 61.2 percent in 31 games. He has 37 touchdowns vs. 14 interceptions.
