Houston Texans interview Josh McCown for head coach role

Now-retired quarterback Josh McCown played for nine different teams in his NFL career. While he never got into a game for the Houston Texans, he also spent time on the roster at the twilight of their season in 2020.

When the Texans were searching for their next head coach after Bill O’Brien a year ago, McCown reportedly interviewed for the role, before the organization landed on David Culley. Now with Culley pushed out the door just one year later, the franchise is returning to interview McCown yet again. Actually, he’s already completed the interview.

On Thursday, the organiazation announced the interview themselves, via the Houston Texans official Twitter account.

Since retiring from the league, having played his last game in 2019, McCown has since taken up coaching high school quarterbacks, specifically for his sons team in North Carolina.

Josh McCown isn’t the only surprise name interviewed by the Houston Texans

The Texans have, rightfully so, cast a wide net in search of their next head coach. One name that surprised a lot of football enthusiasts was when they interviewed former wide receiver Hines Ward. No disrespect to Ward in any manner, he’s likely a fine candidate to be hired as a head coach someday, but again, it came as a surprise.

Maybe it’s simply because it feels like Ward was catching passes from Ben Roethlisberger not that long ago. Although it’s now been over a decade since his retirement in 2011, Ward started his coaching career in 2019 with the New York Jets. Currently, Ward is the wide receivers coach at Florida Atlantic, so becoming an NFL head coach would be a pretty big leap for the former Steeler.

While McCown and Ward are both seen as longshots for the eventual role, there was some belief that McCown could eventually emerge in Houston as their desired candidate, even dating back to last season. At the end of the day, Josh McCown becoming the head coach of the Houston Texans could happen, but it isn’t expected to be this year.
