Houston QB D’Eriq King announces he’s entering transfer portal during CFP title game

After taking a redshirt in 2019, Houston Cougars quarterback D’Eriq King announced he’s entering the transfer portal. And he did it right in the middle of the National Championship Game.

Midway through the third quarter as Clemson and LSU slugged it out in New Orleans, King tweeted out, “I’ve entered the portal I think it’s best for me and my family!”

Quite aside from the interesting timing, it’s funny just how a bit of time can change things. When King announced he was going to take a redshirt this season, he also made a declaration that he’d be returning to Houston in 2020. More than that, he hit back at reports that he would look to transfer after redshirting (more on that here).

But a player of his caliber will have some intriguing options as transfer candidate. Oregon and LSU, just to name a couple of high-profile schools, have openings coming up in 2020.

King was mentioned as a dark-horse Heisman candidate before the start of the 2019 campaign. He racked up 50 touchdowns from scrimmage in 2018 and is one of the most dangerous playmakers in the nation.
