Giants sign Gold Glove 2B Yolmer Sanchez, per report

The San Francisco Giants bolstered their infield depth for the 2020 season, reportedly agreeing to a minor-league contract with Yolmer Sanchez, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

The 27-year-old won the Gold Glove Award in 2019 for his outstanding defense at second base with the Chicago White Sox. Chicago placed him on waivers in November and he ultimately cleared waivers.

Sanchez reportedly received several offers to sign an MLB contract with multiple teams, but saw a better opportunity in San Francisco.

While he excels defensively at second base, Sanchez posted just a .638 OPS and .252 batting average this past season with the White Sox. The young infielder’s best season came in 2017, when he hit a career-high 12 home runs with a .732 OPS.

Sanchez will compete with Mauricio Dubon, a top infield prospect acquired by the Giants before the trade deadline in July. Dubon posted a .754 OPS across 104 at-bats after arriving in San Francisco.
