Frank Gore and Andre Johnson’s Plan was to Join Colts Together

Apparently the plan to play together for the Indianapolis Colts stemmed from a phone call by running back Frank Gore to wide receiver Andre Johnson, his former teammate at the University of Miami.

Last Saturday, most people, including Gore himself, thought it was a done deal that he would sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, something or someone rhyming with the name Kip Shelly must have given Gore cold feet, causing him to reconsider.

With the Indianapolis Colts also interested in Gore, he decided to call Johnson last Monday evening just hours after the news broke that the wide receiver had been released by the Houston Texans.

Here is what Johnson had to say about the two ending up on a private jet to Indianapolis.

Frank called me right after I got released and he was like, What are you going to do, trying to hide a smile retelling the Monday night call.

I was like Frank, I just got released. I haven’t heard anything. I don’t know anything.

What are you going to do? Gore kept asking

I don’t know.

Johnson also had a question for Gore on that call:

I asked him, Well, where do you think you can win a Super Bowl at? If you had to pick a team right now, today…

And he was like, ‘Indy.

Johnson concurred with Gore’s thoughts:

That’s my same choice, too. Let’s do it. Let’s go for it.

Shortly after that phone call, both Gore and Johnson, who played for the National Championship Hurricanes in 2001, arrived at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center. They met up with current associate head coach Rob Chudzinski—also a former coach with the Hurricanes from back in Johnson’s and Gore’s days with the school.

If you’re fans of either Gore or Johnson, it will be really tough watching them play elsewhere after a decade. However, both will truly have a better opportunity at a championship in Indy before they cruise into retirement after a few more seasons.
