Chicago Fire FC acquired Mexican winger Jairo Torre via transfer from Liga MX side Atlas F.C.

The 21-year-old will join the club on May 1, and his contract with Chicago will run through the 2025 season, the Fire announced Saturday.

“Jairo checks all the boxes that we were looking for in a Young Designated Player, and we’re very pleased to acquire his services ahead of the Club’s 25th season in MLS,” George Heitz, the Fire’s sporting director, said in a news release. “Jairo has been one of the most productive young players in Liga MX and was an integral part of Atlas’ championship-winning team in 2021. We expect him to be a very important and exciting player for the Club and look forward to welcoming him to Chicago on May 1.”

Torres made his debut with Atlas in November 2016 at age 16 and has appeared in 108 matches (80 starts) across all competitions. In the 2021 Liga MX Apertura season, he appeared in 21 games (20 starts), including all six playoff games. Atlas won its first Liga MX championship in 70 years.

So far in the 2022 season, Torres has made 28 appearances (27 starts). Among players under 23, he ranks first in Liga MX in key passes, second in precise crosses, third in expected goals and assists, and third in attacking one-on-one situations. He is fourth in overall goals and assists.

Torres also has experience with Mexico’s national team at the U-17, U-22 and senior team levels.

With the Fire, he will occupy an international slot. He is the third designated player on the roster, joining midfielders Xherdan Shaqiri and Gaston Gimenez.
