Ezekiel Elliott to land Todd Gurley-type contract, Stephen Jones says

The Dallas Cowboys aren’t going to mess around when it comes to securing their best offensive weapon, Ezekiel Elliot, long term.

On Tuesday, Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones said Elliott is going to get “a significant” contract extension with the Todd Gurley deal as a guide, per Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram.

For reference, Gurley signed a four-year extension with the Los Angeles Rams last year worth $57.5 million, with just under $22 million guaranteed at signing. That was a record-breaking contract, and it’s not hard to imagine Elliott’s representation will demand even more due to his production and the rising salary cap.

Since entering the league as the No. 4 pick of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Elliott has been the most productive running back on a per-game average. He’s tallied over 131 total yards per game, 101 rushing yards per game and has scored 34 touchdowns.

Elliott is the key cog in Dallas’ arsenal. When he’s not featured, generally the Cowboys struggle. Clearly, the team is smart to lock him up long term, even if he does break the bank in the process.
