Just recently retired from the NBA, future Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade is spending his idle time helping those in need.
The story starts in Alabama where 15-year-old Nigel Shelby committed suicide after being on the receiving end of anti-gay bullying at his high school.
The young man’s mother, Camika, is obviously grief stricken over her son’s passing.
That’s where Wade and a number of celebrities are here to help. Coupled with his better half, Gabrielle Union, among others including hip-hop star Ludacris, donations are coming in to help the woman.
“We’re told the effort was spearheaded by Pinky Cole — owner of the popular ATL restaurant Slutty Vegan and “Master of None” star Lena Waithe, who enlisted their famous friends to help out,” TMZ Sports noted.
The sudden death of her son obviously hit Camika hard. But the theme behind those who helped mirrored the woman’s words following Nigel’s untimely passing.
“Nigel was a sweetheart. He loved everybody, he would help anybody. He was an angel,” Camika said, via ABC News . “I just wish people could’ve seen how special he was while he was still here.”
If tragedy itself can bring an issue to the forefront, said tragedy wasn’t in vain.
We applaud Mr. Wade and others who have stepped up to bring this bullying issue to the headlines. It’s important that we as a society move forward while accepting people for who they are.
