Drew Lock now taking ‘bulk’ of Broncos’ second-team reps during practice

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock opened training camp and the team’s first two preseason games as the third-string quarterback. But this past week, following a much improved second outing last weekend against the Seattle Seahawks, the rookie has been elevated to a certain degree.

According to Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post, Lock has been taking ” the bulk of second-team snaps” this past week during practice.

Offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, however, isn’t ready to hand the backup job to the rookie just yet, saying the job is “absolutely” still up for grabs. Lock is in competition with veteran Kevin Hogan for the role of Joe Flacco’s backup.

Blessed with plenty of natural arm talent, Lock must now consistently show improvement as a game manager and leader within the offense.

“You have to be steady and continue to improve your craft,” Scangarello said of Lock. “It won’t happen overnight. It’s going to be incremental as you get more comfortable in this league and in this offense and what it takes to be a quarterback.”

Recent comments made by head coach Vic Fangio about Lock indicate the Broncos want to see significant progress from the rookie before giving him any further responsibilities.

Next up is a date with the San Francisco 49ers on “Monday Night Football,” and based on the way that defense is playing lately, he’ll need to be particularly sharp to avoid a disastrous outing.
