The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated left-handed ace Madison Bumgarner from the injured list and will start him Friday against the visiting Chicago Cubs.
Bumgarner, 31, hasn’t pitched since June 2 due to shoulder inflammation.
Bumgarner left his start that day against the New York Mets after just two innings due to discomfort in his left shoulder. He later hypothesized that he “maybe got a little carried away” working on his pitching mechanics between starts.
The longtime San Francisco Giants star is now in his second season with Arizona, owners of the worst first-half record in the majors (26-66). This season, Bumgarner is 4-5 with a 5.73 ERA and 62 strikeouts over 12 starts.
In the back end of a doubleheader in Atlanta April 25, Bumgarner tossed an unofficial, seven-inning no-hitter.
