The Detroit Tigers placed catcher Grayson Greiner on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a strained left hamstring and purchased the contract of catcher Eric Haase from Triple-A Toledo.
To make room for Haase on the 40-man roster, the Tigers also placed right-hander Franklin Perez on unconditional release waivers. Detroit announced Tuesday that Perez will undergo shoulder surgery.
Greiner, 28, was batting .237 with one home run and five RBIs in 14 games for the Tigers. He joins fellow catcher Wilson Ramos (back) on the Tigers’ injured list. In his fourth season, Greiner is a career .198 hitter with nine home runs and 44 RBIs in 120 games, all with the Tigers.
Haase, 28, has just 26 games of major league experience over the past three seasons. The Detroit native played seven games with the Tigers last season after coming up in the Cleveland organization and playing his first 19 major league games with the Indians.
The Tigers elected to release Perez instead of place him on the 60-day IL, where he would accrue service time. The 23-year old, who does not have any major league experience, could be re-signed by the Tigers on a minor league deal.
