Detroit Pistons interviewing Rex Kalamian for head coaching vacancy

After four consecutive losing seasons, Dwane Casey and the Detroit Pistons mutually agreed to part ways. Casey will no longer be the head coach of the Pistons, but he will still be a part of the front office, helping choose the next team leader.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, that interview process has turned to Rex Kalamian, who’s set to meet with the team later this week. While the Pistons are already quite familiar with Kalamian, being that he’s been an assistant coach with the team since 2021, they’ve likely never looked at him with the idea of becoming a head coach.

But Kalamian has long been an NBA assistant, beginning with the Los Angeles Clippers back in 1995, where he remained for eight seasons. The Pistons are the seventh franchise he’s been a part of. He also recently became the head coach of the Armenian men’s basketball national team, giving him some hands-on head coaching experience in addition to his nearly three decades as an NBA assistant.

While the Pistons are sure to interview several others as they look for the right fit who can maximize Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Jalen Duren’s potential, it’s nice to see a respected coach like Kalamian get a chance to make his case.
