Before taking the field Sunday, Washington receiver DeSean Jackson issued a statement, via the team, about wearing cleats that feature a police-tape design.

On Saturday, Jackson made some strong comments to TMZ about his motivation behind these controversial cleats.
“Senseless killings have been ongoing for awhile and police brutality in our black community … and as a young black leader with a stage and platform I’m starting awareness to help prevent these killings, and hopefully get justice to these cops who have taken lives of innocent human beings.”
Jackson says he doesn’t just want justice, but also “a change with the decision making on these cop killings.”
“I am also coming up with a master plan to start a movement” with the intention of making a real impact.
Jackson joins the growing number of NFL stars who have become vocal about police violence towards people of color and about misguided violent protests.
No doubt, the receiver will receive a fine from the NFL for wearing these non-uniform cleats. But it appears that’s something he knows and is more than okay embracing.
