Broncos running back Mike Boone will be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a quad injury, 9News Denver reported on Friday.
Boone sustained the injury on Thursday during a joint practice with his former team, the Minnesota Vikings.
The 26-year-old Boone signed with the Broncos in free agency after spending three seasons with the Vikings. He was expected to vie for playing time behind Melvin Gordon and rookie second-round pick Javonte Williams.
“He’s a pro. Mike is an explosive runner and he’s different from what we have — a little bit more of a change of pace,” Broncos general manager George Paton said Thursday. “He can take it to the house. He has the most speed of any of our backs. I think he’ll help us in the pass game. I mentioned before, he’s a four-phase teamer, which is vital for your backup running backs.”
Boone rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown in 16 games last season with Minnesota. He has rushed 71 times for 379 yards and four scores in 40 career games with the Vikings.
