Dellin Betances to open season on DL with shoulder injury

The New York Yankees won’t have pitcher Dellin Betances when they open the season, as the four-time All-Star is dealing with shoulder impingement.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network shared the news on Tuesday afternoon.

Betances has been struggling with arm strength all spring, but on Tuesday morning he told reporters he wasn’t worried about his velocity.

“I am not concerned, it was the same thing in 2015, it was a big story,” Betances said Tuesday morning at his George M. Steinbrenner Field locker, per the New York Post. “The only problem is that it’s later in spring training this year and the season starts earlier.”

Apparently, the team was concerned enough to shelf him for the time being and let his shoulder get fully healthy.

Known for his blistering fastball that sometimes reaches triple digits, the 6-foot-8 star could be suffering from long-term fatigue due to so much work the past few seasons.
