Deion Sanders flips No. 1 CFB recruit from FSU to Jackson State on national signing day

Deion Sanders

In an absolute stunner of an announcement, the number one overall college football recruit, wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter has flipped from committing to Florida State to Jackson State, where Deion Sanders is the program’s head coach. This has to be by far the greatest accomplishment yet as far as recruiting goes for Primetime.

The number one rated recruit in the country has never before attended a non-FBS program. Jackson State is an FCS program in the Southwestern Athletic Conference composed of historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).

A five-star two-way player, Travis Hunter made the announcement himself on his social media platforms.

But that wasn’t the best part. In his announcement video, Hunter had some fun with the other rumored schools that were in contention.

As you can see, this is huge news on national signing day. Hunter, a Georgia native, had been committed to attending college at Florida State for some time now. There were also rumors the WR/CB could flip to his home state and play for the Georgia Bulldogs, but evidently, the temptation to learn from one of football’s greatest cornerbacks of all-time in Deion Sanders was far too great to pass up.

247Sports has Hunter graded with a perfect 100 player rating. He stands at 6-foot-1, 165 pounds.

Deion Sanders landing Travis Hunter shocks the nation

Credit to Travis Hunter for taking the gamble on not going to an established program such as Alabama, Georgia, or Florida State. He’s betting on himself and is clearly confident in his abilities. Hunter’s putting his faith in Deion Sanders’ ability to help him get to the next level.

With this move, Hunter could pave the way for several other athletes to ignore bigger schools for personal matters closer to their hearts. While Florida State fans may feel spurned, it’s good for football to have more talent spread throughout the nation.

Sanders led the Jackson State Tigers to an 11-1 record in the SWAC East division, where they won their first SWAC title since 2007 in his first full season as head coach. The Tigers went 4-3 during his first, shortened season in 2020. Sanders also won SWAC Coach of the Year for his effort in 2021. His son, Shedeur, is the team’s starting quarterback.
