New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has taken quite a bit of heat for his decision to select Daniel Jones out of Duke No. 6 overall. In the aftermath of that decision, Gettleman said he knew for a fact that there were two other teams that wanted to jump ahead of the Giants at No. 17 for the quarterback.
One of the two teams has already reportedly been ruled out in rather emphatic fashion.
Now comes a report from Bleacher Report draft insider Matt Miller, who spoke with an AFC executive.
It’s not a pretty picture, Giants fans. So you might want to sit down.
“There is no way he was going anywhere else in the top 17 picks,” said one plugged-in executive for an AFC team. “We run mock drafts and run through the scenarios and I hadn’t heard of one team that wanted Jones other than them.”
Miller also wrote that he “couldn’t find any team other than the Giants who had Jones ranked in the top two passers.”
Giants fans have agonized about this selection. Heck, “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin took the time to rip Gettleman over the move on his person blog after the first round was concluded.
It’s hard to feel any confidence about what Gettleman is doing for Big Blue. Especially in hindsight, when all the reasons for taking Jones No. 6 overall are being debunked.
