Dane Goodwin helps Notre Dame roll over Western Michigan

Dane Goodwin had 18 points and Notre Dame rolled past Western Michigan 85-52 in a nonconference game at South Bend, Ind., on Monday.

Paul Atkinson Jr. supplied 17 points, five rebounds and three assists for Notre Dame (5-5). Blake Wesley contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Cormac Ryan added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks for the Fighting Irish.

Western Michigan (4-7) was led by Lamar Norman Jr. with 15 points and five rebounds. Markeese Hastings tossed in 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Notre Dame shot 51.8 percent from the field and held the Broncos to 35.6 percent shooting. The Irish recorded 19 assists on 29 made field goals and committed just seven turnovers. They also made 14 of 31 3-point attempts in a game that they never trailed.

The Fighting Irish scored the first 10 points of the game. Wesley and Goodwin got in an offensive groove with early 3s.

The closest the Broncos came after that slow start was 12-8 when Norman made a 3-pointer. With the score 27-21, Notre Dame reeled off 13 unanswered points.

Goodwin also got that outburst going with a 3-pointer. Wesley scored two buckets during that stretch and Atkinson scored six points, including a pair of dunks in a 30-second span.

Prentiss Hubb’s 3-pointer was the final points of the half and gave Notre Dame a 44-23 lead. Atkinson had 13 points prior to the break, while Norman led Western Michigan with nine points. The Broncos were held to 32.3 percent shooting and committed seven turnovers.

The Fighting Irish kept the lead above 20 points throughout the second half. Goodwin knocked down a 3-pointer seven minutes into the half to make it a 30-point game at 60-30.
