Dallas Cowboys extend Dan Quinn with multi-year deal

With as many as nine head coach openings at one point this offseason, there was a strong belief Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn would receive a second chance to be a franchise’s head coach during the 2022 hiring cycle. But we learned on Thursday, Quinn won’t be getting that opportunity this year, as the former Falcons head coach has pulled his name out of consideration for the remaining seven vacancies.

At first it seemed like a strange move, especially knowing that he appeared to be a finalist for the New York Giants’ head coach gig. Not to mention, the Las Vegas Raiders have yet to hire a general manager, although they could be close to making a decision there also.

Instead, Quinn is receiving a multi-year extension to stick around in Dallas according to David Moore, a local Cowboys reporter. The Cowboys, possibly fearing how the defense would respond without Quinn, ponied up some additional cash to keep the respected coach around.

While it is a multi-year extension, anyone who has an idea how these negotiations go knows Quinn could very well just leave next season to pursue another head coaching opportunity.

Dan Quinn could eventually become the Dallas Cowboys head coach

Coach Mike McCarthy appears safe for 2022, but he may not make it through the entire season, especially with Quinn on hand. There could be a scenario where Quinn takes over for McCarthy midway through the year if the Cowboys experience some early struggles, Jerry Jones may not wait to pull the plug.

Named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the Pro Football Writers Association, Quinn is on the fast track to becoming a head coach again, it’s only a matter of time. By signing him to an extension, which surely included a nice pay bump, the Cowboys are hoping Quinn doesn’t get away, in the event they may want him for themselves.
