D.C. United re-signed midfielder Felipe Martins on Monday for one season with a club option for 2022.

Martins, 30, has started 16 games over two seasons since arriving from the Vancouver Whitecaps during the 2019 season. Martins played every minute in his seven starts in 2020 before tearing an ACL during a September practice that ended his season.

Martins underwent surgery to repair his knee, and it is unclear if he will be ready when D.C. United opens training camp the last week of February. The regular season begins the weekend of April 3-4.

“Felipe is a veteran leader for our club. His presence in both the locker room and on the field, paired with his qualities on and off the ball make him a valuable member for us now and moving forward,” Dave Kasper, the general manager and vice president of

soccer operations, said in a club statement. “We know Felipe will return stronger than ever next season and we look forward to him continuing to play a leadership role for us.”

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, though Martin reportedly made $500,000 last season.

A native of Brazil, Martins has been in MLS since 2012, making 256 career regular-season appearances with D.C. United, Vancouver, Montreal and the New York Red Bulls, with whom he won the Supporters’ Shield in 2015.
