Cubs OF Jason Heyward placed on IL without designation

The Chicago Cubs placed veteran outfielder Jason Heyward on the injured list Tuesday without an injury designation, which usually indicates a positive COVID-19 test.

Cubs manager David Ross told reporters that Heyward “had some real stuff,” including body aches and dehydration, but said the 32-year-old is “doing OK.”

Cubs teammates Marcus Stroman and David Robertson also have spent time on the IL without a designation. Stroman, who last pitched on May 1, is ramping up to return.

Heyward is batting .208 in 27 games this season with two doubles and four RBIs. Now in his seventh season with Chicago after previous stays with the Atlanta Braves (2010-14) and St. Louis Cardinals (2015), Heyward is a lifetime .258 hitter with 158 career homers and 635 RBIs, along with five Gold Glove awards.
