The Cleveland Indians placed DH Franmil Reyes on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left abdominal strain.
Reyes left Saturday’s 5-3, 10-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins in the middle of a sixth inning at-bat after fouling off a pitch. Reyes, who had hit a two-run home run in the first inning, was replaced by pinch-hitter Jordan Luplow.
In a corresponding move, Cleveland recalled infielder Owen Miller from Triple-A Columbus. Miller, 24, hit .406 with seven extra-base hits in 16 games with Columbus this season. He will bat sixth as the Indians’ DH on Sunday.
Catcher Roberto Perez, who had surgery on his fractured right ring finger earlier this month, was moved from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster for Miller, whom Cleveland acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Mike Clevinger trade last August.
Reyes, 25, is hitting .257 with 11 home runs and a team-leading 29 RBIs in 40 games this season. Cleveland acquired Reyes from the San Diego Padres on July 31, 2019 in a three-way trade that sent Trevor Bauer to the Cincinnati Reds and Yasiel Puig to the Indians.
In 336 career games with the Padres (2018-19) and the Indians, Reyes has hit .262 with 73 home runs and 175 RBIs.
