Cleveland Browns’ Kareem Hunt likely out 4-6 weeks after ‘signfiicant’ calf injury

Cleveland Browns running back Kareem Hunt is likely headed for injured reserve after head coach Kevin Stefanski announced the NFL star suffered a significant calf injury in Week 6.

Hunt, starting for an injured Nick Chubb, went down with a non-contact injury against the Arizona Cardinals. He needed assistance leaving the field and was emotional as a cart took him into the locker room.

While Stefanski didn’t offer specifics, he told reporters Hunt is dealing with a significant calf injury. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared the initial timeline for a return is 4-to-6 weeks.

  • Kareem Hunt stats (2021): 361 rushing yards, 5.2 yards per carry. 161 receiving yards and five total touchdowns

The injury couldn’t come at a worse time for Cleveland. Chubb missed Sunday’s game with a calf strain suffered in Week 5 and didn’t practice during the week. Considering he was ruled out 48 hours before the game, he is in serious jeopardy of not playing on Thursday against the Denver Broncos.

With both star running backs likely sidelined, D’Ernest Johnson would step into a featured role. The 5-foot-10 running back has seen extended NFL action in just one game. He received 13 carries against the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, recording 95 rushing yards and averaging 7.3 yards per carry.

If the situation at running back wasn’t bad enough, quarterback Baker Mayfield is playing through a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. He plans to start in Week 7, but he isn’t at full strength and there is a chance the injury gets even worse.
