Wimbledon has appointed Marija Cicak of Croatia as the umpire at Sunday’s men’s singles final — the first woman to hold the job since the event began in 1877.
Cicak, 43, is a familiar face at the All England Club. She was in the umpire chair for the men’s semifinal match in 2018 between John Isner and Kevin Anderson, as well as for the 2014 Wimbledon women’s final and the women’s doubles final in 2017.
She has worked the tournament for 15 straight years.
No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia will meet Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No. 7 seed, on Sunday. A Djokovic win would give him 20 Grand Slam championships and tie him with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for the most ever.
Sunday’s match will be Bettettini’s first Grand Slam final.
Cicak has plenty of big-match experience. She also was in the umpire chair in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 during the ladies’ singles final in the Olympics.
She is classified as a gold badge chair umpire and has been part of the WTA Elite Team since 2012.
