Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo missed his third straight start Friday as he continues to deal with lower back tightness.
Rizzo was hoping to return for Friday’s afternoon game against the visiting Cincinnati Reds but the Cubs chose to be cautious.
“We’ll take it day-to-day with him and just listen to his body,” Chicago manager David Ross said. “He’s an important piece.”
The 31-year-old Rizzo last played on Tuesday when he went 1-for-4 with an RBI against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The three-time All-Star is considered day-to-day.
“He continues to tell me he’ll be available and try to work and be ready to help if he can,” Ross said, “But from my seat, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to push that.”
Rizzo is batting .258 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 46 games this season. He has contributed double digits in home runs in every season since 2012.
