The Chicago Cubs activated versatile Nico Hoerner from the 10-day injured list on Sunday and optioned infielder Sergio Alcantara to Triple-A Iowa.
Hoerner has been sidelined since sustaining a strained left hamstring on May 25. He was listed as batting sixth and playing second base on Sunday for the Cubs, who aim to snap an eight-game skid in the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds.
Hoerner, 24, is batting .338 with seven doubles and nine RBIs in 21 games this season. He has made starts at second base and shortstop as well as in the outfield.
Alcantara, 24, is batting .179 with two homers and four RBIs in 30 games this season.
