Bears coach Matt Nagy said last week there was a good chance Montgomery would be activated off injured reserve and available to play. Montgomery sustained a knee injury in Chicago’s Week 4 win against the Detroit Lions and returned to practice last week.
He was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 9.
Despite missing four games, Montgomery still leads Chicago with three rushing touchdowns and ranks second with 309 rushing yards behind rookie Khalil Herbert (351). The rookie emerged as the Bears’ featured back in Montgomery’s absence, rushing for 344 yards – fourth most in the NFL — over that span.
Montgomery, 24, has rushed for 2,268 yards and 17 touchdowns and caught 85 passes for 672 yards and three TDs in 35 games since the Bears drafted him in the third round in 2019.
Herbert, 23, is still expected to have an impact when the Bears (3-5) visit the Steelers (4-3). The Bears have lost three straight games.
