Chargers GM: ‘No timetable’ for Philip Rivers contract extension

The Los Angeles Chargers fully expect their longtime quarterback to be a member of the team long beyond Philip Rivers’ 2019 contract year.

In no way does this mean that Rivers will be extended any time soon. According to Chargers general manager Tom Telesco, there’s no timetable for a new contract.

“I don’t really have a timetable on it,” Telesco told NFL Network on Tuesday. “We wanted to get through free agency, get through the draft, see where we are right now and we’ll look at it from here and through the draft. But I really don’t have any firm timetable on it.

Rivers, 37, remains one of the most underpaid players in the NFL. His average salary of $20.81 million ranks 15th among quarterbacks.

For his part, the borderline future Hall of Famer is coming off what was a career-best 2018 campaign that saw him put up 4,308 yards with 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions en route to helping Los Angeles to a surprise playoff appearance.

Any new deal would likely pay Rivers north of $30 million annually after the quarterback market has reset itself multiple times over the past two years.
