The 2021 Cayman Islands Classic basketball tournament has been called off for a second straight year because of ongoing restrictions due to COVID-19.

“The Cayman Islands Government has been successful in containing Covid-19. However, due to the existing travel restrictions, the conditions are still not conducive to host the tournament in 2021. Unfortunately, we have to postpone this year’s event,” said Joe Wright, CEO of Caymax Sports Ltd.

The tournament was scheduled to be held Nov. 22-24.

Now, the next Cayman Islands Classic is slated for Nov. 21-23, 2022. Six schools already have signed contracts to take part: LSU, Kansas State, Illinois State, Nevada, Tulane and Western Kentucky.

The 2022 event will be the fourth Cayman Islands Classic. Cincinnati won the inaugural tournament in 2017, followed by Creighton in 2018 and George Mason in 2019.
