The Carolina Hurricanes announced a three-year contract extension Thursday for head coach Rod Brind’Amour.
Brind’Amour, 50, has led the Hurricanes to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. The extension will keep him in Raleigh, N.C., through the 2023-24 campaign.
“Rod has been the driving force behind the culture change we’ve undergone here,” Carolina president and general manager Don Waddell said in a news release. “He keeps our players motivated, demands accountability, and has our team ready to compete every night. He has truly raised the bar for our organization, and we’re thrilled to have him continue as our coach for years to come.”
Brind’Amour has compiled a 120-66-20 record behind the Hurricanes’ bench, the highest winning percentage (.631) in franchise history. Carolina won the Central Division title with a 36-12-8 record this season and lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round of the playoffs.
Brind’Amour is a finalist for the 2020-21 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year, along with Dean Evason of the Minnesota Wild and Joel Quenneville of the Florida Panthers.
Brind’Amour played 1,484 games in the NHL from 1989-90 through 2009-10, accumulating 1,184 points (452 goals, 732 assists) and 1,100 penalty minutes with the St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Hurricanes. He won the 2006 Stanley Cup with Carolina and was a two-time Selke Trophy winner.
