Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is not one to speak up on the biggest and most controversial topics of the day. He’s remains quiet on numerous issues surrounding the football world and the broader American political landscape.
That’s why it was a bit of a surprise that Newton actually spoke up regarding Colin Kaepernick’s current status as an unemployed NFL quarterback.
In talking to the media on Tuesday, Newton seeemed to throw support behind Kaepernick. Again, it was a surprising comment from the usually reserved quarterback.
“I really think it’s unfair. I think it’s unfair,” Newton said. “But in my opinion do I think Kaepernick is better than some of these starting quarterbacks in this league? Absolutely. Should he be on a roster? Absolutely, there’s no question about that.”
Newton is just the latest player to come to Kaepernick’s defense. And a lot of the focus has been on the quality of quarterback play in today’s NFL.
In Week 1 alone, the likes of Josh McCown, Tom Savage, Jared Goff and Scott Tolzien are all slated to start. For his part, it’s looking more and more like Kaepernick will remain unemployed throughout the entire 2017 season.
Newton and the Panthers take on Kaepernick’s former San Francisco 49ers team on Sunday. That’s what led to this line of questioning.
