Former Carolina Panthers No. 1 pick and NFL MVP Cam Newton last suited up back in 2021. The quarterback did not latch on with a team last season and has obviously seen his best days.
This won’t stop Newton from attempting to make a comeback in the NFL. The always boisterous free agent took to social media recently to announce that he will throw for teams during Auburn’s Pro Day on Tuesday.
This is not necessarily the equivalent of a workout in front of NFL teams. Rather, it’s all about the 33-year-old quarterback proving he can still offer something to interested parties.
Newton’s last on-field experience came with the aforementioned Panthers back in 2021. He boasted an 0-5 record in as many starts, throwing just four touchdowns against five interceptions.
Newton had spent his first nine NFL seasons in Carolina before the team released him ahead of the 2020 campaign. He then spent the following season as the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback in replacing Tom Brady. Despite some struggles through the air, he was still able to compile 20 total touchdowns against 10 interceptions in 15 starts.

Once considered one of the most-dynamic quarterbacks in modern NFL history, Newton has seen injuries catch up to him. He’s thrown just 77 touchdowns against 59 interceptions since the start of the 2016 season. In his first five NFL seasons, Newton tallied 160 total touchdowns compared to 64 interceptions. That included winning the NFL MVP in 2015.
One of the reasons Cam Newton did not latch on with a team last season was his unwillingness to take on a backup quarterback job. If he wants to return to the NFL, it’s only going to be as a backup right now.
