John Griffin is returning to Bucknell as an alumnus and now the new head coach of the Bison.

Bucknell named Griffin as its new coach Tuesday, hiring their former 1,000-point scorer away from St. Joseph’s, where he was an assistant coach the past four seasons.

Griffin replaces Nathan Davis, with whom the school parted earlier this month after eight seasons.

Bucknell will formally introduce Griffin on March 29.

“John Griffin is a rising star in the college basketball coaching ranks, and I am tremendously excited to welcome him back to Bucknell as our next head coach,” Bucknell athletics director Jermaine Truax said in the release. “As the son of a coach, John has always had a bright mind for the game of basketball, which was on full display during his playing days at Bucknell and now as a coach.”

Griffin helped lead Bucknell to four NCAA Tournament appearances, two as a player (2005, 2006) and two as an assistant coach (2017, 2018).

He averaged 8.5 points per game in 127 career contests (69 starts) from 2004-08.
