One week after Jonquel Jones of the Connecticut Sun and Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury were named WNBA Players of the Week for week 9, their teammates Brionna Jones and Skylar Diggins-Smith are each named players of the week for week 10.

This is the third straight week that the WNBA player of the week has come from the Phoenix Mercury and the fourth straight week from the Connecticut Sun.

In three games last week, Brionna Jones averaged 18.0 points on 67% shooting, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.7 steals with the Sun winning all three games extending their win streak to eight games. This included an August 28 performance against the Los Angeles Sparks in which she recorded 16 points on 63% shooting, 15 rebounds and three steals.

The Sun improved to 20-6 on the season taking sole possession of the best record in the WNBA breaking a tie with the Las Vegas Aces who they defeated head-to-head on August 24.

Only two of the Sun’s remaining six games will come against teams currently in playoff position including a September 11 game against the Connecticut Sun.

In two games against the New York Liberty, Skylar Diggins-Smith averaged 27.0 points, 6.0 assists and 2.5 steals with the Mercury winning both games extending their win streak to six games.

The Mercury are looking to put themselves in contention for a top three seed in the WNBA playoffs. Currently sitting in fifth place in the standings with a record of 15-10, they are 0.5 games behind the Minnesota Lynx for the fourth seed and 1.5 games behind the Seattle Storm for the third seed.

The final three games of the Phoenix Mercury’s remaining seven games this season will come against the Connecticut Sun, Seattle Storm and Las Vegas Aces respectively. Two of those three games will be played on their home floor and there will be a six-day rest period between their matchup against the Sun and their penultimate game against the Storm.
