When they were teammates with the Green Bay Packers, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers had a rocky relationship, at best. They’ve since reconciled, however, and Favre is now speaking very highly of his former backup.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Favre said Rodgers is “the best player in the game.”
He also said he thinks Rodgers — especially in the wake of the Bleacher Report article that has led to so much controversy — now understands why he was so guarded during his playing days.
“He’s really at the stage now where I was when he came into Green Bay … and now he sorta sees why I did the things that I did and was more reclusive than younger players.
“I think as you get older you’re a little bit more guarded, maybe a lot more guarded for reasons like this.”
Additionally, Favre said he hopes new head coach Matt LaFleur should “tread lightly because you don’t want to take away what he does so well — which is a lot of good things — and handcuff him.”
That comment might raise eyebrows due to the way Rodgers and McCarthy ended their relationship, but there is certainly a bit of truth behind it. One of the reasons Rodgers is so good is that he makes amazing things happen in the heat of the moment.
As for Favre’s “best player in the game” claim, some other players might have an argument against it. Yet when healthy, there is no doubt Rodgers is one of the league’s biggest superstars and most potent quarterbacks.
