It is March Madness which means that basketball is on the brain of pretty much everyone. We hope your brackets are going well, but even if they aren’t or you have no idea how to fill one out, that doesn’t mean you have to miss on basketball fever. If you don’t want to watch the NCAA games, there’s still plenty of basketball content out there for you to enjoy.
Below, we’ve put together a list of basketball movies, TV shows, and documentaries for you to check out on Hulu when you’re between NCAA games or just need a break from the action. Some of these options will require an additional add-on, but the majority are included with basic Hulu subscriptions. So lace up, and let’s dribble over to your March Madness-adjacent viewing options.
White Men Can’t Jump (2023)
You need a Max subscription to watch the original White Men Can’t Jump, but there’s no need for that when the 2023 re-make is just as fun and poignant. Rapper Jack Harlow and The Blackening star Sinqua Halls take over the roles originated by Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes. It’s an odd-couple team-up between a hippy baller and an injured all-star who must join forces for either to have a shot at their dreams coming true. The new screenplay is co-written by black-ish creator Kenya Barris, so you know it comes with the jokes, but just like the original, this version also cuts to the heart. You’re gonna get game, but you’re also going to get in your feels.

Long Shot: The Kevin Laue Story (2012)
If you want to get pumped up by an emotional true story, then check out Long Shot: The Kevin Laue Story. The documentary describes the life of Kevin Laue, who now goes by Atlas. He was born missing half of his arm but dreamed of playing for a Division I college basketball team. The documentary follows Kevin on his quest, shows his determination to overcome adversity, and how he made it to his dream.

Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers (2022)
Did you really think there would be a basketball content recommendations list without mentioning the Lakers? There is a lot of content about the iconic basketball franchise out there, but this documentary goes in-depth. It is 10 episodes long and begins with Jerry Buss buying the team and drafting Magic Johnson and goes through to 2020 and the on-court Black Lives Matter protests. It features footage of all the greats, including Magic, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Shaq, and of course, LeBron. It covers the story not only of the Lakers’ success on the court but also of what was going on with the Buss family behind the scenes over the course of almost three decades.

The Last Dance (2020)
This is our last documentary recommendation, but it’s an important one. Can we really talk about basketball without mentioning the G.O.A.T., Michael Jordan? The Last Dance is one of the most critically acclaimed documentaries of the last decade. The documentary spans Jordan’s entire career but is heavily focused on his last season with the Chicago Bulls from 1997-98. There’s never before seen footage from that pivotal season as well as interviews with Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, and Phil Jackson. The 10-episode miniseries won an Emmy Award, a Producers Guild Award, a Television Critics Association Award, and an NAACP Image Award. You need the ESPN Plus with Hulu bundle to be able to watch, but it is worth it.

Space Jam (1996)
Okay, enough with the tear-jerkers and on to the fun. When it comes to basketball movies, Space Jam is one of the best of all time. Don’t try to argue, Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toons crew had serious skills. Their plight to overcome the Monstars and save their world is incredibly inspiring, and it led to the introduction of Lola Bunny. It’s got basketball. It’s got drama. It’s got a little bit of romance. It’s got humor. And it has an absolutely killer soundtrack. That thing still holds up after almost 30 years. Space Jam is only available with a Hulu + Live TV plan or a Max add-on.

One Tree Hill (2003)
Do you like your basketball with an insane amount of teen high school drama on the side? One Tree Hill is one of the wildest teen dramas to come out of the WB era (just look up “the dog eats Dan’s heart” on YouTube, you won’t regret it). While yes, the show is mostly about drama in the town of Tree Hill and the love triangle between Brooke (Sophia Bush), Lucas (Chad Michael Murray), and Peyton (Hilarie Burton), basketball is at the core. It was a refreshing change when it seemed like high school teens only played football in the late ’90s and early 2000s. The early seasons feature a lot of on-court time and the later seasons take us to the NBA. This choice is for all of the people who may not get basketball as a whole but are very into the basketball aesthetic.
