New York Mets starting pitcher Bartolo Colon was a bit surprised that he couldn’t face former teammate Alex Rodriguez when his team took on the New York Yankees Thursday night.
The two have not only played together in the past, they’ve been rivals for the better part of the past two decades when Colon made his way to the majors back in 1997.
When discussing his surprise in not facing Rodriguez, who was benched in favor youngster Gary Sanchez on Thursday, Colon had this hilarious information to share.
“We all know he hits well against me,” Colon said after the game. “I was surprised not to see him. That’s my dad.”
Colon isn’t necessarily wrong here. Rodriguez boasts a career .411 batting average with eight homers and 20 RBI in 56 at-bats against Colon.
With Rodriguez out of action on Thursday, Colon pitched into the seventh inning, yielding just one earned run in a 4-1 win over the Yankees. Maybe A-Rod could have helped change that outcome a bit.
