Baltimore Orioles slugger Ryan Mountcastle was placed on the 7-day concussion list Sunday, stemming from a tag to the head two days earlier.

The move was retroactive to Saturday.

Mountcastle was thrown out attempting to steal second base in Friday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was tagged in the head in the first inning and he departed the game following the second frame.

Mountcastle reported symptoms on Saturday, prompting the team’s decision to be cautious.

“Disappointing, I talked to him this morning. He’s feeling a lot better today,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said prior to Sunday’s game against the Rays. “He’s trending in the right direction. Concussions are serious, and we’re taking it seriously.”

Mountcastle is batting .264 with 19 homers and 63 RBIs in 101 games. He is splitting time between first base, designated hitter and left field.

The 24-year-old was on a tear, going 13-for-25 with three homers and eight RBIs over a seven-game span.

Baltimore recalled left-hander Alex Wells from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. The 24-year-old is 1-2 with a 7.64 ERA in five appearances (three starts) with the Orioles.
